Did you know?
There are many analog telephony systems still in use today… Guardian Telecom Ltd., a proud Calgary, Alberta-based company, continues to build and offer leading analog telephony solutions for critical communications infrastructure.

One of their Made in Canada solutions is a “Ring Detect Relay” (RDR).
What is an RDR?
A Ring Detector and Relay (RDR) is a specialized device that monitors telephone lines for incoming calls and triggers external alert systems when a call arrives. When the RDR detects the electrical ringing signal on a phone line, it automatically activates connected peripheral devices such as strobe lights, loud ringers, or other visual and auditory alarms.
It is a bridge between standard telephone systems and enhanced notification equipment, making it invaluable in challenging environments where traditional phone rings might go unnoticed. In industrial settings like refineries, manufacturing plants, or processing mills, ambient noise levels often make hearing a standard telephone ringer difficult. However, bright strobe lights can be spotted from hundreds of feet away, even in bright lighting conditions.
RDRs are particularly beneficial for:
- Noisy industrial environments where standard ringers are inadequate
- Users with hearing impairments who rely on visual cues
- Large facilities where personnel may be distributed across wide areas
- Critical communication points where missing calls could impact safety or operations
By extending the reach and visibility of incoming call notifications, RDRs ensure that important communications aren’t missed, regardless of environmental conditions or physical limitations.
